The catalogue notes: ‘The authenticity of these pictures is placed beyond a doubt by the fact that they have never been out of the possession of a member of the “GIRTIN” family’. This was the sale of Julia Hog Cooper (née Girtin) (1839–1904) who noted in a letter to the auctioneers that the works in the sale 'were delivered to me by the representatives of my late father, Thomas Calvert Girtin, who was the son of Thomas Girtin, the artist, and that such pictures are genuine works by the artist'.

  • 46 – ‘Do., do. “Kirkstall Abbey”’. The work was bought by the South Kensington Museum as by Girtin. It is now attributed to an anonymous copyist (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1086-1884). See TG1638 figure 1.
