Prints and Etchings of Mr. James Mason …Together With a Number of Sketches, in Colours and Indian Ink; Views from Nature; a few Pictures, &c. by the late Mr. Edward Dayes
Messrs. King and Lochée
Reference: King, 3 April 1806
Edward Dayes (1763–1804) committed suicide in May 1804 and a sale at the auction house of Charles Farebrother of the ‘Library of Books, beautiful Drawings, Books of Prints, &c. &c. by that justly esteemed and admired Artist, Mr. Dayes, deceased’ was advertised soon afterwards. No copy of the catalogue has been traced. The large number of low-priced 'Drawings' included in this 1806 sale suggests that Dayes' widow kept back the bulk of his sketches and it may have been at this sale that Dr Thomas Monro (1759–1833) acquired the large number of the artist's works that were included in his posthumous sale (Christie's, 2 July 1833).
