About this Work
This watercolour last appeared in public at an auction in 1951, though because the catalogue was not illustrated there is no way of confirming its authenticity. However, Thomas Girtin (1874–1960) and David Loshak listed it in their catalogue of the artist’s works, where they dated it to 1799 and described it as showing the view from ‘inside the Cloister Court looking towards the Dormitory’ (Girtin and Loshak, 1954, p.178). The dormitory is located in the surviving East Range, above the Chapter House, so it is likely that the watercolour depicts the same view seen in Valle Crucis Abbey: The Chapter House, from the South West (TG1345).
