About this Work

This work has not been seen in public since it was sold at auction in 1903, but, although it does not appear to have been photographed, it is at least possible to say that it is a version of the composition depicted in Tynemouth Priory, from the Coast (TG1086). Thomas Girtin (1874–1960) and David Loshak listed it in their catalogue of Girtin’s works in the section ‘Recorded Drawings, at Present Untraced’, suggesting that it formed the basis for a mezzotint by Samuel William Reynolds (1773–1835) that was executed around 1823–24 but not actually published until 1883 (see print after TG1086) (Girtin and Loshak, 1954, p.210). Tom Girtin (1913–94) thought that the other version of this composition was by John Henderson (1764–1843) and that Henderson copied the mezzotint (Girtin Archive, 12), but this view is surely incorrect, and, given that the other version seems to be the basis for the print, rather than the other way around, it is this missing, smaller work that, if it reappears, is likely to come under suspicion.
