About this Work

View of Paris with the Louvre, Taken from the Pont Marie

Although this work was included by Thomas Girtin (1874–1960) and David Loshak in their catalogue of Girtin’s watercolours, they added the proviso that it was only ‘probably done’ by the artist, and a later note in the Girtin Archive repeats the doubts about the attribution expressed by Paul Oppé (1878–1957) (Girtin and Loshak, 1954, p.197; Girtin Archive, 40A). When the work appeared at auction in 1999, I thought that it was a good copy by a competent amateur that had been cut to the right (Exhibitions: Phillips, 11 July 1999, lot 45). Could it have been copied by Girtin’s patron John Henderson (1764–1843), who is known to have copied at least one of the Paris prints (see TG1866b figure 1) and who subscribed to a set of the proofs (Chancery, Income and Expenses, 1804)?1

Another version of plate three (see figure 1), worked in pen and sepia ink and wash, and showing the full extent of Girtin’s composition, is known only from an old photograph. This is almost certainly by an anonymous copyist.

Footnotes

  1. 1 A list of subscribers is included in John Girtin’s account of the income he received from the Picturesque Views in Paris, together with the expenses incurred in completing the project. They are transcribed in the Documents section of the Archive (1804 – Item 1).
