About this Work
This view of Lincoln Cathedral from the south was included in two early exhibitions as by Girtin, and was listed as an untraced work by the artist in Thomas Girtin (1874–1960) and David Loshak’s 1954 catalogue (Girtin and Loshak, 1954, p.209). However, as Timothy Wilcox has clearly demonstrated, it was produced by a young Peter De Wint (1784–1849), confirming the earlier doubts of Alexander Finberg (Finberg, 1919, pp.26–27; Wilcox, 2008, pp.50–51). In retrospect, it is difficult to see how the attribution remained unchallenged for so long, since not only is the style of the work, with its bold outlining in pen and ink, alien to Girtin’s approach, but also the view shows the cathedral’s western towers without the characteristic spires that feature in the older artist’s views of Lincoln (such as TG1008), which were removed around 1808, six years after his death.
