About this Work

This watercolour of Boveney Church, near Windsor, appeared at auction in 1987 (Exhibitions: Sotheby’s, 26 January 1987, lot 64) having not been since it was recorded in a sale in 1908 (Girtin and Loshak, 1954, p.207). The watercolour was listed as from the ‘Circle of Thomas Girtin’, and, though this cannot be confirmed as the work does not seem to have been photographed, it is unlikely that it was by Girtin, even if he does seem to have visited the area around 1797–98.
