Henry Vaughan (1809–99) was a founder member of the Burlington Fine Arts Club and a generous patron of the arts, presenting The Haywain by John Constable (1776–1837) to the National Gallery in 1886 and a group of drawings by Michelangelo (1475–1564) to the British Museum. On his death he made substantial bequests of watercolours by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) to the National Gallery of Ireland and to the Royal Institution, Edinburgh, now the National Gallery of Scotland. These included a number of Turner’s collaborations with Girtin at the home of Dr Thomas Monro (1759–1833), such as Lake Albano, from Palazzolo (TG0617), though they were attributed solely to the former at the time.
