John Linnell (1792–1882), a distinguished landscape painter, acted as an art dealer early in his career. In his manuscript journal for 1820 he records a number of visits to the home of Dr Thomas Monro (1759–1833) in order to take away works by Girtin and John Robert Cozens (1752–97), which he attempted to sell to Chambers Hall (1786–1855) and a ‘Mr Harman’ (possibly the banker Jeremiah Harman (1763–1844)) (Linnell, Journal, 1817–23). Hall agreed to buy Durham Cathedral, from the South West (TG0919) and The West Front of Jedburgh Abbey (TG1231), paying ten guineas and fourteen guineas respectively, though he returned York Minster (TG1047).
