John Charles Crowle (1738–1811) was an attorney from Wakefield who was a member of the Society of Dilettanti and a keen antiquarian. He began to compile an extra-illustrated copy of Thomas Pennant’s (1726–98) Some Account of London in the early 1790s, eventually adding 3,347 illustrations to the text (Pennant, 1793). Bound in fourteen volumes, it was bequeathed to the British Museum with two views by Girtin of the ruins of the Leathersellers’ Hall included in the twelfth volume (TG1410 and TG1411). These were bought by Crowle at Girtin’s posthumous sale in 1803 (Exhibitions: Christie’s, 1 June 1803, lot 122).
