Arthur Edward Anderson (c.1871–1938) was, according to the 1911 census, a ‘Clerk to East India Merchant’ and was then living at Brightling Hall in Sussex. A wealthy bachelor, he purchased hundreds of watercolours and presented them directly to galleries, many of which he never visited. In all he bought and gave away eight watercolours by or attributed to Girtin, including Chepstow Castle, from the River Wye (TG0170), A Distant View of Knaresborough, from the South East (TG1669), The Ogwen Falls (TG1330) and Bamburgh Castle (TG1104).
